Abstract

Study and career-relevant competencies that go beyond subject-specific competencies (i.e. cross-disciplinary competencies) are relevant for student teachers and must therefore be addressed at an early stage. Due to the current shortage of teachers in Germany, it is important to identify those cross-disciplinary competencies that are related to student satisfaction. To this end, 594 first-year students (age: M = 19.20, SD = 2.03) were surveyed in a standardized way on already known influencing factors to explain student satisfaction and their cross-disciplinary competencies in a cross-sectional design. Regression analyses show that methodological skills and social skills contributed substantially to the explanation of satisfaction with study content (ZSI), satisfaction with study conditions (ZSB) and satisfaction with coping with study-stress (ZBSB) beyond the influence of personality traits, motivation and self-efficacy expectations. Personnel competences do not make any additional contributions. Handling of different subjects and successful cooperation are particularly important cross-disciplinary competences for explaining all components of student satisfaction. Successful interlinking of theory and practice is also a significant factor in explaining ZSI.
