Abstract

The teaching profession is accompanied by culturally impregnated, idealized assumptions about pedagogical action, which take insufficient account of the ambiguous side of school teaching. How phenomena such as practice shock, dropout or burnout among novices are related to this has been investigated since the 1980s. This article analyses the extent to which school movies depicting challenging teaching situations can serve as vehicles of knowledge to irritate established ideas about the impact of teachers, such as those told by Hollywood movies like Dangerous Minds (1995). To elaborate on that, European school movies such as Class Enemy (2013), which portray more ambivalent teachers, are discussed in terms of their potential for teacher education.
