Abstract

The paper deals with multilingualism-related assumptions and everyday myths and is classified under the aspects of second language acquisition, linguistic diversity and handling heterogeneity of the GSL structural model. A learning opportunity for two seminar sessions is presented, which encourages the discussion of the ideas about multilingualism and second language acquisition that students bring along at the beginning of their studies. Starting from their own multilingual self-concept, the method of the “language-head-portrait” developed by the author creates an occasion for reflection, which should make the students aware of their own multilingualism. The following examination of common myths raises awareness of questions that may arise when working with students who acquire German as a second language. The task aims to develop an appreciative and competence-oriented view of multilingual competences.
