Abstract

Interdisciplinary teaching has become commonplace in many schools. This is tied to expectations of improved connectivity between the subject-related lesson content and higher application orientation. However, the didactic challenges of interdisciplinary teaching are seldom part of formal teacher training. For that reason, the sports pedagogy and biology didactics departments of a German university cooperatively developed a school internship programme that is described in the present contribution. It seeks to enable future teachers of both subjects to gain some initial experience in interdisciplinary teaching. At a partner school, the interns plan and teach a three-week interdisciplinary unit. Working in a team comprised of three students from each subject, the students engage in the planning and standardised reflection of all lessons in their unit. Through interdisciplinary cooperation, all students can gain an insight into both subject perspectives as well as the experiences of planning lessons in a team. Both researching and teaching staff unanimously agree that these are key conditions for successful interdisciplinary teaching.
