Abstract

Professionalism as a goal of teacher education has been intensely discussed during the last couple of years. The corresponding academic discourse in special needs education is unique: discrete conceptions of professionalism have been established and debated in controversial ways. This paper juxtaposes special needs education and general education considerations of professionalism. Introducing meta-reflexivity as a theoretical perspective can help to understand these lines in a way so that they don’t mutually exclude each other but can be used as synergetic amendments to define the form and content of professionalism in special needs education more precisely.
