Abstract

This paper is a report on a seminar on geography education for students in pre-service teacher training for the lower secondary level held at teacher education colleges. The seminar aimed at creating a professional framework for the reflection of the Model of Educational Reconstruction in relation to teaching practice (Kattmann, Duit, Gropengießer & Komorek, 1997). The learning objectives of the seminar were to acquaint students with the model as a research and development framework for teaching, to discuss the model in detail and to develop guidelines and strategies for a learning environment in geography that promotes in-depth learning. This paper introduces the concept of the seminar and includes a proposal for a learning environment designed according to the principles of educational reconstruction and developed by the students in the course of the seminar. In addition, the paper discusses the learning progress that the students were able to achieve in the seminar and the particular difficulties they faced.
