Abstract

This paper describes important theoretical, methodological and content-related aspects of a project-based seminar for students of English and American Studies. The seminar mainly focuses on the analysis of popular cultural texts and aims at enabling students to prepare these texts for use in the EFL classroom. Next to discussing the seminar’s underlying concepts from the perspectives of literary studies, foreign language education and media didactics, the present paper describes the notions of project-based learning and cognitive apprenticeship. An exemplary analysis of a popular cultural text as well as some reflections on the practical implementation are presented in order to show the way of adaptations of the course concept to other subject areas.
